🧠 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝟮-𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿: 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Brain metastases have traditionally been associated with advanced cancer and limited survival. However, for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, treatment advances have changed the outlook entirely.

The spread of cancer to the brain is relatively common in HER2-positive breast cancer. With increasingly effective treatments, some patients can now live for years after developing brain metastases.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. The goal is no longer just to control what we see on the next MRI scan, but also to preserve brain function and quality of life over the longer term.

🎥 In this lecture, Dr Daniel Tan discusses how different treatment approaches can work together, including:

• 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 (𝗦𝗥𝗦) – precisely targeting brain metastases while minimising radiation exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue.

• 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝟮-𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀 – integrating newer medications that can also act against cancer in the brain.

• 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 – including the prevention and management of radiation necrosis (damage to healthy brain tissue following radiation treatment).

• 𝗪𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲-𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 (𝗪𝗕𝗥𝗧) – recognising when and how to use it appropriately.

This October, Carmen took her vision a step further by initiating and organising 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, bringing together cancer survivors, medical specialists and the community for meaningful conversations about cancer care and life beyond treatment.

Dr Daniel Tan was invited to join Carmen’s panel discussion, “4 Experts, 4 Perspectives, 1 Cancer Journey,” where he shared about the role of advanced radiation technologies as the last line of defense in cancer care. Alongside were also specialists in breast surgery, and reconstructive plastic surgery.

The conversation explored not only advances in cancer treatment, but also the emotional, practical and financial considerations that patients and their families face along the way.

Dr Jonathan Teh Yi Hui, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director of the Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (CSR), joined our long-standing partners OncoCare Cancer Centre on their recent regional cancer education outreach symposium.

Dr Teh shared his expertise on the evolution of radiotherapy, from conventional techniques to today's advanced, precision-guided treatments, with patients, caregivers and the public, including in a feature interview on 𝗞𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗩'𝘀 "𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗮".

“Using the right tool for the right situation, based on evidence and experience, allows radiation oncologists to give hope to advanced cancer patients by eliminating their cancers while preserving their quality of life," he said.

As trusted collaborators for more than a decade, AARO has been providing in-house radiation oncology support to OncoCare Cancer Centre, and this trip reflects that continued partnership in bringing quality, personalised cancer care to patients across the region.
