Accelerated Partial Breast Radiotherapy (IMRT)

The Problem

Whole breast radiotherapy can result in acute side effects such as swelling, discomfort and skin changes over the entire breast. Long term side effects include breast fibrosis which can lead to breast asymmetry. A large randomised clinical trial conducted in the United Kingdom showed that partial breast irradiation had similar outcomes to whole breast irradiation. (IMPORT-LOW trial)

Technological Solution

Using IMRT, we can target the area of the breast where the tumour originally was and spare the rest of the normal breast tissue. This will minimize the acute and long term side effects compared with whole breast radiotherapy, without compromising the local control of the cancer.
